Saskatoon launch for Daschuk book

October 5, 2013 - October 5, 2013

The Saskatoon book launch and community discussion of Clearing the Plains: Disease, Politics of Starvation, and the Loss of Aboriginal Life by James Daschuk is happening on Saturday, Oct. 5 at Station 20 West starting at 7:30 p.m.

James Daschuk’s book (University of Regina Press) examines the roles that Old World diseases, climate, and, most disturbingly, Canadian politics – the politics of ethnocide – played in the deaths and subjugation of thousands of aboriginal people in the realization of Sir John A. Macdonald’s “National Dream.”

It was a dream that came at great expense: the present disparity in health and economic well-being between First Nations and non-Native populations, and the lingering racism and misunderstanding that permeates the national consciousness to this day.

There will be a talk, question-and-answer session, panel discussion, book sales and signing, and refreshments. Admission is free. For more information call (306) 955-3070. Turning the Tide Bookstore is sponsoring and hosting this event.
