Healthy Start/Départ Santé is a bilingual initiative developed in Saskatchewan that increases healthy eating and physical activity opportunities in early learning environments. Through a partnership of organizations led by the Réseau Santé en français de la Saskatchewan (Saskatchewan Network for Health Services in French) with funding from the Public Health Agency of Canada, Healthy Start is a new approach that engages directors, educators, cooks and parents, providing resources, training and ongoing support.

SPHERU, along with researchers from across Canada, is involved in an evaluation component of the initiative to monitor and assess the impact of Healthy Start in both Saskatchewan and New Brunswick. SPHERU is leading the Knowledge Dissemination and Exchange aspects of this research.

Goals / Outcomes: The objective of the evaluation is to understand the extent to which Healthy Start increases physical activity levels and healthy eating behavious among children in early learning centres. Additionally, the inter-provincial nature of the initiative provides an opportunity to explore the transferability and generalizability of Healthy Start across Canada.
