Canadian Observatory

Researching the justice system’s response to intimate partner violence

Observatories are proactive investigators, providing strong political messages that inform policy making. The Canadian observatory mobilizes knowledge by creating and sustaining a synergy among those who are studying intimate partner violence and the justice system response, and by facilitating the sharing and transferring of knowledge across the country and abroad. The project team, led by Principal Investigator Carmen Gill of the University of New Brunswick, includes academics from 13 Canadian and international universities, research centres, counseling centres, foundations, and both federal and provincial government departments.

Goals / Outcomes: The project establishes a national, bi-lingual research network that looks at the justice system through the lens of intimate partner violence. It will develop forums from the regional to the international level that will disseminate analyses and program/policy outcomes.
